For many years the American media said that "Israel receives $1.8 billion in military aid" or that "Israel receives $1.2 billion in economic aid."
Both statements were true, but since they were never combined to give us the complete total of annual U.S. aid to Israel, they also were lies—true lies.
Recently Americans have begun to read and hear that "Israel receives $3 billion in annual U.S. foreign aid."
That's true.
But it's still a lie.
The problem is that in fiscal 1997 alone, Israel received from a variety of other U.S. federal budgets at least $525.8 million above and beyond its $3 billion from the foreign aid budget, and yet another $2 billion in federal loan guarantees.
So the complete total of U.S. grants and loan guarantees to Israel for fiscal 1997 was $5,525,800,000.

There are those who contend that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is all about Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.   This is absolute nonsense.
In truth, the history of the conflict is not over occupation, and never has been:  it is over the fundamental right of Israel to exist.
The greatest threat to Israel's right to exist, with the prospect of devastating violence, now comes from Iran.
For too long, leaders of both political parties in the United States have not done nearly enough to confront the Russians and the Chinese, who have supplied Iran as it has plowed ahead with its nuclear and missile technology....
In the words of Isaiah, we will make ourselves to Israel 'as hiding places from the winds and shelters from the tempests; as rivers of water in dry places; as shadows of a great rock in a weary land.'

Since the criminal State of Israel denied me the right to work as a journalist in my homeland Palestine and forced me to flee to Europe, I often ask myself why the U.S.A does not stop donating to Israel the bombs which they use against the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Why did the U.S.A send military detachments to Israel after the Israeli lost the war in the south of Lebanon?
The Israeli military radio, 'Tsahal Radio' announced these news.
They said that the American detachment of officers had arrived in Israel to take part in the 'Autumn Clouds' operation in Gaza.
That they helped the Israeli military to perform their 'killing duties' without any loss.
American officers were involved in the last Beit Hanoun massacre, in which in one incident 20 Palestinians were killed, at least 60 innocent children, old men and women were injured.

The Beit Hanoun massacre, a day of bloody clouds.
On November 1, 2006, the number of the Palestinians who were killed in Gaza during the 'Autumn Clouds' Israeli military terror operation reached 86, and at least 265 were injured.
This happened before the criminals of the Israeli State perpetrated the now generally known massacre in Beit Hanoun.
The morning of November 8, 2006, Israeli tanks shelled Palestinians in their homes in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun.
They fired eleven shells into six homes, killing at least 20 Palestinians, wounding some 60 more.
The Irony is that this attack comes a day after Israeli troops pulled out of the town after a week-long offensive in which dozens of Palestinian died, and hundreds were injured.
A person from Gaza, who also sent me most of the pictures of this article, posted this on that day:

Each time I read about the criminal Israeli operation in Gaza, seeing the increase in the number of the civilian victims, I swallowed my pain and closed the computer.
Until that evening, a day after the Beit Hanoun massacre, when I saw a group of Jews lead a demonstration against an Austrian rightist group which has its office near my house.
Suddenly the questions started coming:
How can it be that such a criminal nation has the gut to complain about the deplorable things which befell them in the past?
While they are perpetrating massacres and crimes on a daily basis.
Often worse than the most extreme crimes attributed to the Nazis.

In Beit Hanoun, some of the shells landed on a home, killing 11 members of one family called Al-'Athamneh, including a 9-year-old child and a 73-year-old woman.
The other shells landed on other five homes at Hamad Street in Beit Hanoun.
Other victims were from the Al-Kafarneh family.
Muhammad Athamneh described the massacre to Palestinian newspaper Hayat Al-Jadidah.
He said that the killed were children, women, and old men, that they had killed his mother, sister, uncle and his six sons, and four sons of his second uncle.

Athamneh said that it was 5:30 at the morning, everybody were sleeping, when they heared the very strong blast of the first explosion which landed at his cousins house, followed by screaming and crying.
He ran out, found his relatives, old and young men running in the streets, escaping from the shelling and looking for protection in other places, but that this did not help them to escape from the Israeli shelling.
The "Autumn Clouds" rained missiles on their heads.
They all were killed on the roads.
The whole place was converted into a collective grave.
Athamneh was shocked, he did not know how to save the life of his family and relatives, everybody was bleeding and the floor was covered by a big pool of blood!
He saw the horrible death in front of his eyes.
His cousin’s wife died with her two children while he was screaming and seeking the Ambulance.
Nobody was able to come near under the heavy, blind shelling killing everybody moving in the area.
The sky rained blood that day.

Today Saturday, the US, who said in advance that Israel has the right to defend itself and gave the Palestinian resistance the responsibility for the massacre, vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution condemning an Israeli attack in the Gaza Strip that killed 20 Palestinian civilians and injured more 60.
The disgusting American Psychopath Bolton described the text as 'unbalanced' and 'biased against Israel and politically motivated'.
Does anyone wonder why the Palestinian resistance is shooting missiles toward Israel, which by the way never really reach anything?
The reason is simple: the big concentration camp which is Gaza, where a million and a half people are caged, impoverished and hungry, and where almost all civilian infrastructure has been left in ruins caused by Israel.
The increased poverty and real hunger which the Palestinians suffer in their reclusion:

Why did the European politicians not adopt the request of the Palestinians, who asked for European military forces to be sent to Palestine to protect them and the infrastructure from the Israeli crimes?

US Democrats and Republicans simply have to block passage of any bill that would continue to fund the Israel government.
This requires not 67 or 60 US Senate votes, or even 51, but just 41 — the number of US senators needed to maintain a filibuster and prevent a bill from coming up for a vote.
In other words, the US Democrats and Republicans have more than enough votes to end the Palestine conflict — if they choose to do so.
The US Democratic and Republican leadership may believe — rightly or wrongly — that such a strategy would entail unacceptable political costs, especially with the high level funding from AIPAC and other Israel backed monetary support.
But that's very different from being unable to affect policy.
To insist that the US Congress cannot stop the Palestine conflict obscures the actual choices facing the US people — by confusing "can't" with "won't.

On July 27, 2006, former Israeli Prime Minister, Benyamin Natanyaho, was interviewed by the MSNBC anchor, Tucker, who would agree on anything Natanyaho said, a perfect anchor as far as Israeli propaganda is concerned.
There was no attempt to question the guest or criticize Israeli savage war on Lebanon.
To convince Tucker and his audience, Natanyaho used an analogy from a movie.   He asked Tucker if he had seen a movie called, "The Alien."
He said that Hizbullah in Lebanon is like the alien in the movie, who lived in the host's body.
Then, at a critical moment, the alien jumps out of its human host to kill its enemy by surprising him.   By doing so, the alien kills its human host.
The analogy here is that Hizbullah is destroying Lebanon, its host.

A s the TV networks give unlimited airtime to Israel’s apologists, the message rolls out that no nation, least of all Israel, can permit bombardment or armed incursion across its borders without retaliation.
The guiding rule in this tsunami of drivel is that the viewers should be denied the slightest access to any historical context, or indeed to anything that happened prior to June 28, which was when the capture of an Israeli soldier and the killing of two others by Hamas hit the headlines, followed soon thereafter by an attack by a unit of Hezbollah’s fighters.
Memory is supposed to stop in its tracks at June 28, 2006.
Let’s go on a brief excursion into pre-history.
I’m talking about June 20, 2006, when Israeli aircraft fired at least one missile at a car in an attempted extrajudicial assassination attempt on a road between Jabalya and Gaza City.
The missile missed the car.
Instead it killed three Palestinian children and wounded 15.
Back we go again to June 13, 2006.
Israeli aircraft fired missiles at a van in another attempted extrajudicial assassination.
The successive barrages killed nine innocent Palestinians.
Now we’re really in the dark ages, reaching far, far back to June 9, 2006, when Israel shelled a beach in Beit Lahiya killing 8 civilians and injuring 32.
That’s just a brief trip down Memory Lane, and we trip over the bodies of twenty dead and forty-seven wounded, all of them Palestinians, most of them women and children.

Nine days ago, the Israeli army ordered the inhabitants of a neighboring village, Marwaheen, to leave their homes.
They then fired rockets into one of their evacuation trucks, blasting the women and children inside to their deaths.
And this is the same Israeli air force which was praised last week by one of Israel's greatest defenders — Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz — because it "takes extraordinary steps to minimize civilian casualties".

Many of the Shia in this beautiful Crusader port [of Sidon] have learnt how kind their Sunni neighbors can be.
"We are here — where else can we go?"   Nazek Kadnah asked as she sat in the corner of a mosque which Rafik Hariri built and dedicated to his father, Haj Baha'udin Hariri.   "But they look after us here as their brothers and sisters and now we are safe."
These sentiments provoke some dark questions.   Why, for example, can't these poor people be shown the same compassion from Tony Blair as he supposedly felt for the Muslims of Kosovo when they were being driven from their homes by the Serbs?
These thousands are as terrified and homeless as the Kosovo Albanians who fled to Macedonia in 1998 and for whom Mr Blair claimed he was waging a moral war.
But for the Shia Muslims sleeping homeless in Sidon there is to be no such moral posturing — and no ceasefire suggestions from Mr Blair, who has aligned himself with the Israelis and the Americans.

The Sidon refugees now have 36 schools in which they can shelter — but they are the lucky ones.
Across southern Lebanon, the innocent continued to die.
One was an eight-year-old boy who was killed in an Israeli air raid on a village close to Tyre.
Eight more civilians were wounded when an Israeli missile hit a vehicle outside the Najem hospital in Tyre.
And during the morning, one of Lebanon's journalists, Layal Nejib, a photographer for the magazine Al-Jaras whose pictures were also transmitted by Agence France Press, was killed in her taxi by an Israeli air strike near Qana, the same village in which 106 civilians were massacred in a UN base by Israeli artillery shells in 1996.
She was only 23.

I srael regrets...
But no!    Israel doesn’t regret in the least.
Most of the time it doesn’t even bother to pretend to regret.
It says, “We reserve the right to slaughter Palestinians whenever we want. We reserve the right to assassinate their leaders, crush their homes, steal their water, tear out their olive groves, and when they try to resist we call them terrorists intent on wrecking the ‘peace process’”.
Now Israel says it wants to wipe out Hezbollah.
It wishes no harm to the people of Lebanon, just so long as they’re not supporters of Hezbollah, or standing anywhere in the neighborhood of a person or a house or a car or a truck or a road or a bus or a field, or a power station or a port that might, in the mind of an Israeli commander or pilot, have something to do with Hezbollah.
In any of those eventualities all bets are off.
You or your wife or your mother or your baby get fried.
Israel regrets...
But no! As noted above, it doesn’t regret in the least.
Neither does George Bush, nor Condoleezza Rice nor John Bolton who is the moral savage who brings shame on his country each day that he sits as America’s ambassador at the UN and who has just told the world that a dead Israel civilian is worth a whole more in terms of moral outrage than a Lebanese one.
None of them regrets.
They say Hezbollah is a cancer in the body of Lebanon.
Sometimes, to kill the cancer, you end up killing the body.
Or bodies.
Bodies of babies.
Lots of them.

You can say that Israel brought Hezbollah into the world.
You can prove it too, though this too involves another frightening excursion into history.
This time we have to go far, almost unimaginably far, back into history.
Back to 1982, before the dinosaurs, before CNN, before Fox TV, before O’Reilly and Limbaugh.
But not before the neo-cons who at that time had already crawled from the primal slime and were doing exactly what they are doing now: advising an American president to give Israel the green light to “solve its security problems” by destroying Lebanon.
In 1982 Israel had a problem.
Yasir Arafat, headquartered in Beirut, was making ready to announce that the PLO was prepared to sit down with Israel and embark on peaceful, good faith negotiations towards a two-state solution.
Israel didn’t want a two-state solution, which meant — if UN resolutions were to be taken seriously — a Palestinian state right next door, with water, and contiguous territory.
So Israel decided to chase the PLO right out of Lebanon.
It announced that the Palestinian fighters had broken the year-long cease-fire by lobbing some shells into northern Israel.
Palestinians had done nothing of the sort.
I remember this very well, because Brian Urquhart, at that time assistant secretary general of the United Nations, in charge of UN observers on Israel’s northern border, invited me to his office on the 38th floor of the UN hq in mid-Manhattan and showed me all the current reports from the zone.
For over a year there’d been no shelling from north of the border.
Israel was lying.
With or without a pretext Israel wanted to invade Lebanon.
So it did, and rolled up to Beirut.
It shelled Lebanese towns and villages and bombed them from the air.
Sharon’s forces killed maybe 20,000 people, and let Lebanese Christians slaughter hundreds of Palestinian refugees in the camps of Sabra and Chatilla.
The killing got so bad that even Ronald Reagan awoke from his slumbers and called Tel Aviv to tell Israel to stop.
Sharon gave the White House the finger by bombing Beirut at the precise times — 2.42 and 3.38 — of two UN resolutions calling for a peaceful settlement on the matter of Palestine.
When the dust settled over the rubble, Israel bunkered down several miles inside Lebanese sovereign territory, which it illegally occupied, in defiance of all UN resolutions, for years, supervising a brutal local militia and running its own version of Abu Graibh, the torture center at the prison of Al-Khiam.

O ccupy a country, torture its citizens and in the end you face resistance.
In Israel’s case it was Hezbollah, and in the end Hezbollah ran Israel out of Lebanon, which is why a lot of Lebanese regard Hezbollah not as terrorists but as courageous liberators.
The years roll by and Israel does its successful best to destroy all possibility of a viable two-state solution.
It builds illegal settlements.
It chops up Palestine with Jews-only roads.
It collars all the water.
It cordons off Jerusalem.
It steals even more land by bisecting Palestinian territory with its “fence”.
Anyone trying to organize resistance gets jailed, tortured, or blown up.
Sick of their terrible trials, Palestinians elect Hamas, whose leaders make it perfectly clear that they are ready to deal on the basis of the old two-state solution, which of course is the one thing Israel cannot endure.
Israel doesn’t want any “peaceful solution” that gives the Palestinians anything more than a few trashed out acres surrounded with barbed wire and tanks, between the Israeli settlements whose goons can murder them pretty much at will.

S o here we are, 24 years after Sharon did his best to destroy Lebanon in 1982, and his heirs are doing it all over again.
Since they can’t endure the idea of any just settlement for Palestinians, it’s the only thing they know how to do.
Call Lebanon a terror-haven and bomb it back to the stone age.
Call Gaza a terror-haven and bomb its power plant, first stop on the journey back to the stone age.
Bomb Damascus.
Bomb Teheran.
Of course they won’t destroy Hezbollah.
Every time they kill another Lebanese family, they multiply hatred of Israel and support for Hezbollah.
They’ve even unified the parliament in Baghdad, which just voted unanimously — Sunnis and Shi’ites and Kurds alike — to deplore Israel’s conduct and to call for a ceasefire.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these little excursions into history, even though history is dangerous, which is why the US press gives it a wide birth.
But even without the benefit of historical instruction, a majority of Americans in CNN’s instant poll — about 55 per cent out of 800,000 as of midday, July 19 — don’t like what Israel is up to.
Dislike is one thing, but at least in the short term it doesn’t help much.
Israel’s 1982 attack on Lebanon grew unpopular in the US, after the first few days.
But forcing the US to pressure Israel to settle the basic problem takes political courage, and virtually no US politician is prepared to buck the Israel lobby, however many families in Lebanon and Gaza may be sacrificed on the altar of such cowardice.

Forced from homes by Israel soldier terrorism
In 1948, and earlier and subsequent years, Palestine families have been forced from the their homes by Israel soldier terrorism.   These families have not been allowed to return to homes and property to this day.
Settlements have grown even onto areas of Palestinian land not yet stolen, the settlements protected by Israel soldiers paid for by US taxpayer money.
The US government (and its taxpayer) has not ceased in any way to fund the settlements and the Israel military force that allows for these settlements.
Taking Palestinian peoples land has reached a situation now where the settlers openly go and destroy ancient farmed olive trees in the hope of driving the local Palestinian people away.
US taxpayer money is being used for the demolition of houses, the Apartheid wall project — it is being allocated by Israel for the extensive military operations that go along with securing the ambitions of the Israel government.
The vast army that Israel has is funded by the billions of dollars given annually to Israel by the US government.
Missiles to rain down upon Palestine women children and men
Billions of US dollars allows the Israel government to not only support settlements:   Armaments given to Israel by the US government allows US missiles to rain down upon Palestine women, children and men, both injuring and killing when they protest and when they are merely passively surviving in their homes.
Israel has no incentive, other then the loss of a few lives here and there, which observation to its practices must concede it seems to feel acceptable, to even consider any return of the Palestinian people to their property and homes.
Israel, in addition to the stolen Palestine land it has, wants as much remaining land of the Palestinians as the world will allow it to take.   Israel's wish is to expand so that all Palestine land, and Lebanon land — if this were not stopped by Hezbollah — to become the land of Israel.
Israel's deepest wish is for the Palestine people to be removed to Jordan or Syria and any other accepting country.    This wish, most of the European and American people — those who have arrived in the last sixty years and now occupy the homes and land of the Palestinians — have come to realize is not obtainable.

The Palestine people are too resilient.
Only the most insane in the Israel government, settler and religious population, retain this idea.
So Israel has to take as much land from the Palestinian people as it can before the US people decide, through financial woes or through some enlightening of the US people, to stop funding the present killing and injuring of Palestine people by US taxpayer money via the Israel military and police force.
Within the present stolen land now called Israel, the European and American people who have arrived in the last sixty years recognize they must remove the Semite people (the Palestinians) from their ancient land.    They recognize they must do this if they are not to be overwhelmed with a demographic problem that would give, in a democratic vote, the Palestinian people control.
Such is the reasoning for the withdrawal from Gaza.   It is not because of any wish to give up the land of Gaza.   Present day Israel would simply be overwhelmed by the demographics of too many Palestinian voters.
When a person, or a people suffer, there will be constant revolt.
Must return to their homelands in Europe and America
The Palestine people must have their homes and land returned in the present territory called Israel.
Those who have come to this land and stolen the homes and properties and built on the land stolen must return to their homelands in Europe and America.
On a world scale, with US taxpayer money being poured into weapons and armies allocated by a US government intent on supporting an inner power elite, there cannot fail to be war.    The present huge US military has to show a need for its existence, something the power elite also desire.
So we find ourselves in this predicament.
Let us kill.
Death, even the loss of our son, our daughter, has become part of our existence — death and loss for no reason.
We cannot see any other reality but killing in this military-industrial-media overpower.
The stealing of Palestinian land, and the constant propping up of an alien people coming to this stolen land, is a central aspect of the reality of US killing.

The tragedy of Gaza has been described a hundred times over, as have the tragedies of 1948, of Qibya, of Sabra and Shatila, of Jenin — 60 years of atrocity perpetrated in the name of Judaism.
But the horror generally falls on deaf ears in most of Israel, in the U.S. political arena, in the mainstream U.S. media.
Those who are horrified — and there are many — cannot penetrate the shield of impassivity that protects the political and media elite in Israel, even more so in the U.S., and increasingly now in Canada and Europe, from seeing, from caring.
But it needs to be said now, loudly: those who devise and carry out Israeli policies have made Israel into a monster, and it has come time for all of us — all Israelis, all Jews who allow Israel to speak for them, all Americans who do nothing to end U.S. support for Israel and its murderous policies — to recognize that we stain ourselves morally by continuing to sit by while Israel carries out its atrocities against the Palestinians.
A nation that mandates the primacy of one ethnicity or religion over all others will eventually become psychologically dysfunctional.
Narcissistically obsessed with its own image, it must strive to maintain its racial superiority at all costs and will inevitably come to view any resistance to this imagined superiority as an existential threat.
Indeed, any other people automatically becomes an existential threat simply by virtue of its own existence.
As it seeks to protect itself against phantom threats, the racist state becomes increasingly paranoid, its society closed and insular, intellectually limited.
Setbacks enrage it; humiliations madden it.
The state lashes out in a crazed effort, lacking any sense of proportion, to reassure itself of its strength.
The pattern played out in Nazi Germany as it sought to maintain a mythical Aryan superiority.
It is playing out now in Israel.
“This society no longer recognizes any boundaries, geographical or moral,” wrote Israeli intellectual and anti-Zionist activist Michel Warschawski in his 2004 book Towards an Open Tomb: The Crisis of Israeli Society.
Israel knows no limits and is lashing out as it finds that its attempt to beat the Palestinians into submission and swallow Palestine whole is being thwarted by a resilient, dignified Palestinian people who refuse to submit quietly and give up resisting Israel’s arrogance.
We in the United States have become inured to tragedy inflicted by Israel, and we easily fall for the spin that automatically, by some trick of the imagination, converts
Israeli atrocities to examples of how Israel is victimized.
But a military establishment that drops a 500-pound bomb on a residential apartment building in the middle of the night and kills 14 sleeping civilians, as happened in Gaza four years ago, is not a military that operates by civilized rules.
A military establishment that drops a 500-pound bomb on a house in the middle of the night and kills a man and his wife and seven of their children, as happened in Gaza four days ago, is not the military of a moral country.
A society that can brush off as unimportant an army officer’s brutal murder of a 13-year-old girl on the claim that she threatened soldiers at a military post — one of nearly 700 Palestinian children murdered by Israelis since the intifada began — is not a society with a conscience.
A government that imprisons a 15-year-old girl — one of several hundred children in Israeli detention — for the crime of pushing and running away from a male soldier trying to do a body search as she entered a mosque is not a government with any moral bearings.
(This story, not the kind that ever appears in the U.S. media, was reported in the London Sunday Times.   The girl was shot three times as she ran away and was convicted to 18 months in prison after she came out of a coma.)
Critics of Israel note increasingly that Israel is self-destructing, nearing a catastrophe of its own making.
Israeli journalist Gideon Levy talks of a society in “moral collapse.”
Michel Warschawski writes of an “Israeli madness” and “insane brutality,” a “putrefaction” of civilized society, that have set Israel on a suicidal course.
He foresees the end of the Zionist enterprise; Israel is a “gang of hoodlums,” he says, a state “that makes a mockery of legality and of civil morality.   A state run in contempt of justice loses the strength to survive.”
As Warschawski notes bitterly, Israel no longer knows any moral boundaries — if it ever did.
Those who continue to support Israel, who make excuses for it as it descends into corruption, have lost their moral compass.

How Palestine became “Israel’s Land”

They were there when the Israelites invaded the land, occupied it, and held it intermittently as wave after wave of other conquerors came and went
For Palestinians, theirs is not the land of conquest, but the land of their roots going back to time immemorial.
Such a lineage does not rely on a biblical promise like the Jewish claim that God promised the land to Abraham and his descendants, and is therefore, the historical site of the Jewish kingdom of Israel.
It belongs to the people of Palestine by the simple fact of their continuous residence repeated through birth and possession going back to the earliest Canaanites and even those people living there before recorded history.
They were there when the Israelites invaded the land, occupied it, and held it intermittently as wave after wave of other conquerors came and went, and they were still there when the Romans put an end to Jewish Palestine by destroying Jerusalem in 135AD.
If a religious basis is sought, then the Palestinians can lay claim to being the descendants of Abraham’s son Ishmael who is regarded the forefather of the Arabs.
But actually, Palestinian rights are enshrined in the universally accepted principle that land belongs to its indigenous inhabitants.
Thus, the modern day struggle for this land by European Jewish immigrants who have no connection with Palestine other than through their religion is a colonial enterprise that seeks sovereignty for an "external Jewish population" to the exclusion of the indigenous Palestinians who, regardless of faith — Jewish, Christian or Muslim — have lived together for centuries.
State of Israel created in violation of very resolution which Israelis now look to as giving them sovereignty
Although eager to accept the UN Partition Plan of 1947 which recommended that 56% of the land be set aside for a Jewish State, 42% for an Arab state and 2% for an internationalised Jerusalem and its surrounds, the world has not said a word about the land that was seized by Zionist terrorists before the State of Israel was proclaimed on 14 May 1948.
Through a series of shocking massacres, the territory assigned to the Jews suddenly became 77% resulting in more than 750,000 Palestinians being forcibly expelled and dispossessed of their homes, personal property and their homeland.
The Jewish State then came into being without waiting for the United Nations Commission — prescribed in the Partition resolution — to hand authority progressively over to the Jewish and Arab leaders for their respective states.
And after the 1948 war, Israel declared Jerusalem its capital in contravention of its internationally-recognised status of corpus separatum – a status that is still recognised.
Effectively, the new state of Israel was not only created in violation of, it continued to violate, the very resolution which Israelis now look to as giving them sovereignty.
The Arab state imposed by the UN Partition Plan without consultation and in contradiction to the UN charter — which should have upheld the majority indigenous Palestinians’ right to self-determination — has since been deliberately and methodically whittled away by Israel, leaving nothing but isolated non-contiguous parcels of land to some 4 million Palestinians.
Land Day
Around 170,000 Palestinians remained in what became Israel, the largest number of whom resided in the Galilee area, originally a designated part of the Arab state under the Partition Plan.
These Palestinians also became the victims of Israel’s land grab policy.
Over 438,000 acres, which was more than the total Jewish land holdings at the time, were confiscated and a further 400,000 acres were marked for confiscation.
After Israel won the 1967 war, the total territory of Palestine came under Israel’s rule.
It annexed East Jerusalem, despite the Holy City’s internationally recognised status and began implementing its Jewish settlement program with a vengeance.
The Palestinians in Israel were increasingly aware of their precarious position politically and declared a national strike, known as "Land Day" on 30 March 1976 against Israel’s continuing ruthless land expropriation.
An affinity was quickly felt between Palestinians everywhere and "Land Day" was adopted as a sort of national Palestinian day which is commemorated by Palestinians and their supporters around the world each year.
This awakening of national consciousness had an unequivocal political message: end the occupation and allow self-determination of the Palestinians in a sovereign state living in peace side by side with Israel.
Thirty-one years later, the message is till resonating, but the Palestinians are further away from seeing a solution than ever before.
Daily, Israel is taking a bit of land here and a bit of land there, to make all of Palestine "Israel’s Land".
The problem then will be, what to do with 5 million Palestinians with no land?
There are only a few possible, but criminal solutions — transfer, collective imprisonment, apartheid, and/or ethnic cleansing.
Alternatively, Israel can disengage from the West Bank to the 1967 borders or agree on a single, democratic state for all.
Without a just solution, the struggle for Palestine’s land will continue.
